Avoding Small Business Costs Problems Posted By : Craig Ritsema

May 31, 2007 on 9:32 am | In small business news | No Comments

Many first-time business owners are completely overwhelmed or unprepared by the amount of small business costs associated with operating a business. Small business costs often lead to the failure of many businesses, especially during the first year, or they even prevent them from getting started in the first place. Through a wide array of government and private programs, however, many small business owners have helpful options to help them finance their mounting small business costs.

Is Your Site Ugly And Unprofessional?

May 28, 2007 on 10:04 pm | In small business news | No Comments

How many times have you gone to a web site, glanced at the hideous design for a few seconds, then quickly hit the back button to move on to a more professional site?  I do this all the time, especially when buying a product or service when I have multiple sites to choose from — a sloppy, poorly designed site is deemed to be unprofessional and careless just from the visual cues — as unfair as that may be. Just like in life, looks matter, and people judge you immediately based on your physical appearance.

Unless you are a skilled designer, you should probably avoid building your own site design.  Please, for the sake of your business future, either pay someone to design your site or use a quality web site template. By “quality web site template” I mean one that is css-based, valid html or xhtml, uses properly optimized images and contains the absolute minimun code necessary. Of course, it should also look great — this alone eliminates 95% of all templates I’ve ever seen, especially those junky template packages you see all over ebay.

This site has some fantastic templates that meet all of the above critera and look absolutely amazing.

Good Ad Placement For Tabbed Browsers

May 27, 2007 on 6:11 pm | In small business news | No Comments

Here’s a good tip I read quite a while ago, but forgot to pass on to you…

As more and more people switch to tabbed browsers like Firefox and Internet Explorer 7, a good place to put your ad blocks is right up at the top of your page, immediately under the area where the tabs are displayed.  The ads should be the first thing on the page, no space, nothing else above them — this works for contextual ads like Google Adsense as well as more typical banner ads.

This seems to work because people focus on the tabs much more than they normally would when using a browser that does not include the tabs.  Give it a try!

Get An 866, 877, or 888 Number For Only $2 Per Month

May 27, 2007 on 2:07 pm | In small business news | No Comments

This site has a nice selection of 866, 877 and 888 toll free numbers for only $2 per month plus usage. You can also get an 800 number for $5 per month plus usage, but you need to be a little more careful with the 800 numbers — many of them are recycled from other companies and thrown back into the available pool, and the problem with that is that many are still listed in phone books and directories all over the globe under the old owner’s name or business — those calls then come to you as wrong numbers but you still pay for the length of the calls.  My advice is to get yourself a couple of the non-800 toll free numbers — use one for sales inquiries (highest priority), one for customer service (#2 priority), and one for audio testimonials that you can post to your web site.

A System To Help Get Your Online Business Started

May 27, 2007 on 3:26 am | In small business news | No Comments

I’ve been reading an excellent blog lately — it’s written by Dennis from 5BucksADay.  The premise of the 5 Bucks a Day system is that you begin by creating an income stream of just 5 dollars a day = $150 a month.  You then repeat the process over and over with different products, ideas, and sites until you have built up a very nice online income.

This system works because you actually FINISH an idea before moving on to the next — this is key for those of you scattered in all directions, never getting any one idea finished.  I’m guilty of this as well —  I have hundreds of ideas in my head, and am working on dozens of them at once, but have trouble finishing any single one of them.

Read through the 5 Bucks Blog, get yourself a copy of the 5 Bucks system, and get started ramping up your Internet business.

Small Business Debt Collection Law Cheat Sheet

May 26, 2007 on 11:01 am | In money management | No Comments

by: Joel Walsh

In your small business debt collection laws will eventually become important, as your debt grows and some clients do not pay.

To collect small business debts legally, you must first send a written notice that collections have begun, within five days of first contacting the debtor for collections (for instance, within five days of calling on the telephone). The letter must include dispute instructions.

Small Business Debt Collection Laws Forbidden Practices

* Collect any amount beyond the actual debt, unless you really can do so legally.

* Continue collections on a debt if the debtor has disputed the debt, unless you provide the debtor with written proof.

* Continue contacting the debtor if within 30 days of first contact, the debtor disputes the debt.

* Credit a payment the debtor has made to a non-disputed debt to a debt the debtor has disputed.

* Deposit a post-dated check before the post-date.

Small Business Debt Collections Laws: What You Can’t Say

* Give a false name.

* You are an attorney or government representative, if you are not.

* You have an attorney working for you or that you are going to assign the case to an attorney, if you really do not.

* The debtor has committed a crime, unless you are 100 ure they have.

* You work for a credit bureau, if you really do not.

* The debt is more or less money than it actually is.

* You are sending or have sent legal forms when you really did not.

* You are sending or have sent papers that are not legal forms, if they really are legal forms.

* The debtor will be arrested–no one is arrested for nonpayment of debts anymore.

* You will seize, garnish, attach, or sell the debtor’s property or wages, if you do not really intend to or cannot legally do so (and unless the debt is secured with collateral, you probably cannot).

* You will sue or take other legal action, if you do not really intend to, or are not legally able to do so.

Small Business Debt Collection Laws Forbidden Third-Party Disclosures

Never:

* Give any credit-related information that is not 100
ccurate.

* Tell anyone other than the debtor that you are collecting a debt.

* Telephone any number other than the debtor’s more than once.

Small Business Debt Collection Phone Calls

Never:

* Call after 9 pm or before 8 am.

* Forget to give your name and your company’s name.

* Call repeatedly or in a way intended to annoy.

* Make a collect call.

* Make any threats.

* Use profane or obscene language.

* Leave a message that reveals this is a debt collection.

Small Business Debt Collection Mailing

Never send:

* Postcards.

* Envelopes or mailings with any reference to debt collection on the exterior.

* Anything that looks like an official, legal, or government document, if it is not.

Please note this page is not intended to give legal advice and may not be complete or up to date with the most current collection laws changes.

How Most Millionaires get to be Millionaires…

May 24, 2007 on 9:24 pm | In articles | No Comments

by: Daegan Smith

Why do so many people claim that money isn’t important? Why is there this notion that wanting money somehow makes you an ill adjusted bad human being? It’s such a strange thought pattern don’t you think?

Wanting more money in your life doesn’t mean you’re a bad person. It doesn’t mean you’re greedy either. It just means you want more out of life. You want more freedom. You want more security. You want more fun. Whatever it is, you just want more. Money is just simple a means to that end.

I hoe I don’t let the cat out of the bag, but that’s what this whole home business gig is anyway. Someone sells you on the idea that you can make tons of money working from home as an independent contractor or distributor for this company or that. And, it’s not that you ever buy into the promise that the home business is selling, but you take a leap of faith and give it a try.

We start small, maybe $20 for a book about real estate investing. I know my first brush with the thought that I could be independently wealthy working from home was when I came across an ad for the ebook Googlecash (if you don’t know what I’m talking about just do a quick google search). The idea seemed so easy and so low risk I figured why not give it a try.

That was the beginning, almost a year ago. Here I am now writing to you about my home business experiences. In that time, I’ve bought an apartment building and learned just about everything there is to learn about starting and running a business from home. And guess what? If you haven’t caught on to this yet, no matter what the ads tell you, no home business is as simple or as cheap as the ad would have you believe. But I digress.

Let me get to the point though. Let’s discuss the title of this little article. Most millionaires become millionaires by starting a small business, saving their revenue, and then investing. It really is that simple. Let me say that again, all you have to do to become a millionaire is start a small business, save, and invest.

So, what do millionaire look like? Well, most are in their sixties and living the same type house that you and I live in. They look like us. They dress like us. They are us. The only difference is they have a whole lot more money in the bank.

Here’s a fact that I hope will hit home. There are twice as many millionaire small business owners than there are millionaire doctors or lawyers combined. So, if you own a home based business or you’re thinking about checking out some legitimate home based business opportunities then your on the right track. Just stick with it and don’t give up!

Remember most millionaires are get to be millionaires by being just like you and me, they’re home business entrepreneurs!
